A sensitive lighting design was one of the cornerstones of this heritage restoration.
The imposing building on a site overlooking the harbour was in need of care and renewal. The Church of Scientology came to its rescue. With their restoration they've ensured that the building will remain a landmark for many years to come.
Luminaires that have a direct/indirect light distribution put light on the ceiling, reducing glare and providing a more flattering and comfortable light.
The exterior of Oamaru stone and red brick is echoed inside the building with a theme of red and soft white. The lighting is designed to be soft, warm and welcoming.
The designers have complemented the interior's warmth by using warm tones in the lighting.
Luminaires have been chosen with predominantly circular and cylindrical shapes, avoiding hard edges wherever possible. The use of suspended fittings that throw light on to the ceiling also helps with the atmosphere of softness and comfort and draws the eyes upwards, always a desirable attribute for a spiritual building.
